10/21/2001: Positive Discipline in the Classroom is both thought provoking and enlightening. Throughout the book, all of the theories presented were supported by the authors' thinking and therefore allow the reader to make their own judgements. First, it brings the readers' attention to the importance of emotional intelligence and life skills, as well as, their support and development in the classroom. Then, it details the steps necessary in establishing effective classroom meetings which provide students the opportunity to develop and practice these important skills. Additionally, other positive discipline techniques which work in conjunction with the classroom meeting are described. Most importantly, the book forces the reader to think introspectively about many of the standard practices and behavior management techniques currently being used in classrooms around the country and their effectiveness. The thought of all that could be gained by utilizing classroom meetings and other positive discipline techniques to create a safe and caring community in the classroom for all students, particularly encouragement rather than praise and solutions in lieu of punishment, is quite provocative. The program seems too powerful to resist.
