This handbook is written for junior emergency medicine residents, medical students, and others during their rotations in the emergency department. It serves as a handy reference to the essential and practical information useful in navigating the emergency medicine experience. This manual is intended to offer general guidelines and clinical pearls to help the reader deal with some of the more common problems encountered in the emergency department. For the targeted reader, this book is quite valuable, providing all the basic information needed for the newcomer to the emergency department to survive in an inherently stressful environment. The authors are all affiliated with emergency medicine residency programs (one is a Residency Director), which makes them ideally suited to author a manual targeted at the medical practitioner new to the emergency department. The book is of a manageable length with appropriately chosen content and with illustrations and informative tables that demonstrate important points in an accessible manner. The size and sturdiness of the manual make it ideal for keeping in one's pocket, an other handy feature. I think this manual is a very useful one for the newcomer to the emergency department. It highlights and emphasizes many of the ""pearls"" necessary to get by in the often hectic emergency department setting, with proper emphasis on not only the importance of recognizing life-threatening conditions but also on managing more common emergency department presentations. This text is recommended for those who plan to spend a short period of time in the emergency department and who would like to understand the basic principles of its functioning. For emergencymedicine residents, this manual should serve only as a starting point, with use of more detailed and authoritative references for a more complete understanding of the material presented.

Audience:The intended audience, according to the author, is emergency medicine residents, medical students, and paramedics who will be spending time in the emergency department. However, I feel the level of material presented here is best suited for those at the medical student level. The authors are experienced emergency medicine practitioners who have the knowledge necessary to review this subject material for others.
Features:This review of various topics and presentations encountered in the emergency department, includes a discussion regarding differential diagnosis and management of the emergency aspects of care. The ABC's of trauma resuscitation are covered particularly well, and include appropriate detail on how to perform several emergency procedures. The ACLS guidelines discussed in Chapter 2 do not include the use of amiodarone; however, this is addressed in the appendix. By comparison with other pocket handbooks, this book provides good topic review, but without overwhelming detail.
Assessment:This book provides an excellent review suited for medical students and offers tidbits of information valuable to newly practicing physicians.
