Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Fourth Edition, continues to provide a thorough introduction to the key concepts in the field. In addition to thoroughly updating the material and including more contemporary examples, this new edition includes an online study guide that provides an interactive learning experience for students.
The book contains black-and-white illustrations.
Comprehensive, understandable, and written to capture the excitement of the world of sport and exercise psychology, Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology sets a new standard for introductory textbooks. This engaging text makes it easy for students to learn the basic principles and applications of sport and exercise psychology. Using visuals and anecdotes, case studies, and stories from the world of sport and exercise, the authors explain key concepts in the field and show how they apply to counseling, teaching, coaching, and fitness instruction.
This is the second edition of a comprehensive textbook on human behavior in sport and exercise previously published in 1995. The authors have made substantial changes from the first edition. The changes include updated information in every chapter on the latest research and practice in sport and exercise psychology as well as more practical examples to aid students in applying important concepts. The purpose is to develop a text for introductory sport and exercise psychology classes that bridges the gap between research and practice. The development of such an inclusive text in this area is certainly worthwhile and more than meets the goals of the authors. The book is predominantly targeted at undergraduate students in sport and exercise psychology but will also be an excellent resource for individuals working in all aspects of sport and exercise where the psychological aspects are sometimes ignored. There is no question that these two authors are authorities in sport and exercise psychology. The book includes nearly every conceivable aspect of sport and exercise psychology from group dynamics to health and wellness issues. One of the most helpful aspects of the book is the way the authors bring in examples in sport that the reader can identify with and relate to. They give an example on leadership of Michael Jordan's 38-point performance in Game 5 of the 1987 NBA finals when he was ill. Another invaluable feature is the blue boxes throughout the book that highlight more information on a topic, research, case studies, and application. The authors have done an admirable job of updating their first edition and have developed an excellent text that will hold the interest of studentsas well as serve as a useful source for people in the field of sport and exercise.
