For this inaugural volume of our Cerca series of books, we chose some of the best pleasure trips and explored them through professional photography, first-person accounts by experienced travel writers, maps, and detailed route instructions. About half of the trips are entirely on asphalt, or involve so little dirt road they can be done in a low-slung import sedan. We also included choic dirt-road adventure, all doable in a suburbanite's sport utility vehicle, though some will offer the chance to rest its four-wheel drive and all-terrain tires. John L.
