Today, nearly forty years after his death, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures. We have begun publishing his many works for the first time as blackspine Penguin Classics featuring eye-catching, newly commissioned art. This season we continue with the seven spectacular and influential books East of Eden, Cannery Row, In Dubious Battle, The Long Valley, The Moon Is Down, The Pastures of Heaven, and Tortilla Flat. Penguin Classics is proud to present these seminal works to a new generation of readersand to the many who revisit them again and again.
This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families--the Trasks and the Hamiltons--whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. "A strange and original work of art."--New York Times Book Review.

09/07/2009: I had to read this for school, and I was surprised. I actually enjoyed it. The characters and plot were complex, and it was well written. It was a true classic.
I Also Recommend: The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath.

07/26/2009: I have heard of the book East of Eden, but never really gave the book a chance, until now. This book is very intellectual, mind blowing, thrilling, touching and a page turner. I really enjoyed this book a lot!!! I L.O.V.E how Steinback took his very own analogy on Cain and Able and made it into his own.Steinbeck parallels this earthy tale with the slow unfolding of biblical events in Genesis. He follows that script without being predictable or bound by it, instead showing its immediacy in the human soul and mind.
Adam and Charles Trask are the first main and important characters in the story. They set the scene for everything else in the book unfolding. They are also the only precursors for Adam's own sons, Cal and Aron, who will be even more at odds, because of the favoritism their father has created between them. And this is all predicated on their mother's cold-hearted choices. Cathy/Kate, their mom, is a user, and very manipulative through the whole book. The only character in the book who seems to have their selves together is Lee, the loyal and long-suffering Chinaman. His studies lead to life-changing decisions for Adam and his sons, based on the differences between a fatalistic approach to life or one born from the freedom to choose. But when you start this book, please note. Almost everything is a symbol. Meaning please read the biblical story of Cain and Able. Before you read this book. It will help to understand and enjoy the book more.
