This book is a comprehensive yet practical guide to the field of optical dispensing and ophthalmic lens technology. The new second edition is much more than an update of the 1979 first edition. Most chapters have been completely revised or rewritten, and the very latest developments are included. The preface states that the book is ""intended to serve the full spectrum of those involved in the dispensing process, including students, experienced practitioners, and those learning on the job."" The authors have done a remarkable job in creating a very user-friendly text to meet the needs of so many different professionals. The primary audience will be students in schools of optometry as well as in optician training programs. The format is highly readable and understandable, and ophthalmic dispensers and optometric/ophthalmic technicians will also benefit. Each chapter contains a proficiency test at the end. Assistants and technicians being trained ""on-the-job"" will appreciate the chapters covering basic math principles and elementary optics of refraction. The first 12 chapters cover the selection, ordering, verification, adjustment, and repair of modern eyewear. These chapters feature numerous high-quality black and white photos. The final 10 chapters cover the major clinical topics in ophthalmic optics and make extensive use of line drawings and worked examples. There are three quick reference guides at the front of the book and three appendixes at the end. This is an outstanding contribution to the field of optical dispensing and ophthalmic optics. Description:This is an update to what has become a classic in the profession of optometry. As the title suggests, it covers the topics of fitting, adjusting, and repairing of eyewear. This edition is a complete rewrite of the second edition published in 1996.
Purpose:According to the authors, this book was originally written as a manual for students on the subject of ophthalmic dispensing and was later expanded into a text to be useful for both educational programs and ophthalmic practices. The authors do a wonderful job of covering all of the main areas of ophthalmic lenses in this worthwhile contribution to the profession.
Audience:Although primarily written for optometry and optical students, ophthalmic practitioners will also benefit from this book. The authors are well known, both hold academic appointments, and both have made many important contributions over the years to the field of optometry.
Features:The first of the book's two main parts covers ophthalmic dispensing and includes frame types and measurements, proper selection, adjusting, and repair. Adjusting eyewear is an art that can only be learned over time, but this book uses a step-by-step approach and explains it in such a way that anyone will be able to adjust eyewear successfully in no time. The second half of the book is devoted to ophthalmic lenses and their design. It describes the different designs and usages, appropriate optical mathematics, and finally lens edging. The text is brilliantly laid out in a manner that is easy to read and comprehend. The color photos and illustrations are clearand helpful. Questions are included at the end of each chapter to aid in comprehension and help prepare for testing.
Assessment:This book is a must have for all optometry and optical students. A comprehensive primer on ophthalmic dispensing, it is cleverly written in way that anyone can learn. This edition has been extensively redone and now includes beautiful color photos that make learning fun and easy. I only wish it was available when I was a student!
