Synopsis

Using a case-based approach, this widely used text helps students develop practical problem-solving skills for devising and implementing successful drug treatment regimens. Case studies integrated into each chapter illustrate key concepts and principles of therapeutics and give students practice in developing their own evidence-based therapeutic plans.

This completely updated Ninth Edition incorporates the latest drug treatments and therapeutic practices and guidelines. New chapters cover pharmacogenomics and osteoporosis. Transplantation is now broken into two chapters to ensure adequate coverage. Culturally competent care issues are now incorporated into many chapters.

A companion Website offers the fully searchable text, animations of pathophysiologic concepts, and additional case studies.

Reviewer:Anna M Wodlinger, Pharm.D., BCPS (Temple University School of Pharmacy)
Description:This is the ninth edition of one of the most often used books in pharmacy education, which uniquely uses case studies to present disease states and the clinical use of drugs.
Purpose:The purpose is to stimulate readers to integrate and apply therapeutic principles in the context of specific clinical situations.
Audience:The book is intended for students and practitioners, including residents, and it is particularly useful for students and practitioners who may be less familiar with particular disease states. The authors of each chapter are well known in their respective specialty areas.
Features:A basic introduction to general principles important to medication therapy management begins the book, which then covers the most pertinent disease states and therapeutic issues. The book is divided into sections according to organ system with individual chapters addressing specific disease states. Its best feature is the way it is designed to provide the information in a clinical context. It is potentially difficult to present disease states and their drug therapy options in a case-based format and still be able to cover all details and nuances, but this book is extremely successful. It helps readers to put the information in the context of treatment and consider not only the general recommendations but also specific patient characteristics that are pertinent to implementation of drug therapy. Tables and illustrations throughout each chapter are also available online as a reference for students andfaculty/clinicians.
Assessment:The ninth edition is a necessary replacement of the previous edition since new therapies and guidelines have been published since 2005. The content of this book is not unique to the pharmacy library, but the way in which the information is presented is unique and beneficial for the reader. Readers who learn better from applying information will find this book helpful in learning about disease states and their drug therapy and, particularly, how to apply the information to patient-specific scenarios.
