Dr. James W. Kalat received his B. A. degree from Duke University, Summa Cum Laude, and then continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his Ph. D. in Psychology under the supervision of Paul Rozin. Currently Dr. Kalat is at North Carolina State University where he is a professor of psychology, teaching both introductory psychology and biological psychology. In addition to INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY, Dr. Kalat has also written the best-selling biological psychology text, BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY, Eighth Edition, and has published articles on a variety of diverse topics such as taste aversion learning and on the teaching of introductory psychology. With co-author Michelle Shiota, he recently wrote a new textbook, EMOTION (Thomson Wadsworth, 2006). Dr. Kalat is a talented and frequently requested speaker, and recently presented to rave reviews at the Texas Community College Teachers Association as well as the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology (NITOP).

09/21/2007: The book is beautiful to look at and well-intentioned, but the text of chapters 3 and 4 seem hurriedly-written and the reader is raced through material without proper background or foundational material. For example, Chapter 4, The Anatomy of the Nervous System, reads more like a REFERENCE book, not a learning book. The reader is given the details but not a sufficient overview of how the brain operates. In addition, the chapter starts with a torrent of terminology that is completely unfixed from any foundation. Kalat then writes 'Such technical terms may be confusing at first, but they help investigators communicate unambiguously'. This may well be true, but Kalat and Thomson Learning should have understood that readers of this textbook are junior or senior college students, and need good foundational orientation. Frankly, it is very tough going trying to learn under these conditions. I would recommend a complete rewrite. Chapter 3, 'Synapses' is somewhat better, but also the reader is hard-pressed to see the forest for the trees. For a book in its 9th edition, I was very disappointed that the text of Chapters 3 and 4 were not reorganized by FUNCTION. The author and Thomson Learning should take notice and correct these inadequacies by the next edition. I would not recommend this book for adult learners who are studying on their own. Note to Thomson Learning Executives: Getting a book to press prematurely might help your CEO and upper management staff make money, but it may not help students. The lack of pedagogical methods in Chapters 3 and 4 bear the marks of upper management pressure to 'get the book out looking pretty' but without the adequate learning text that should accompany it. Some of the media clips in the CD are 10 years old, also showing shortcuts by top executive staff. I urge them to serve their audience, not themselves, in the future. The book is very expensive, and using 10-year-old media clips show disrespect for the reader.

03/11/2007: This textbook is very helpful for class. Not only does it provide information for psychobiology, but it makes learning fun. I enjoy reading the chapters, going to the student site accompanying the text, and participating in the 'try -it- yourself' experiments on the CDrom. It's a great textbook! Read it!
