    Synopsis

For the first time in 400 years the Catholic Church has authorized an official universal catechism which instantly became an international best-seller, the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Using this official Catechism, the highly-regarded author and professor Peter Kreeft presents a complete compendium of all the major beliefs of Catholicism written in his readable and concise style.

Since the Catechism of the Catholic Church was written for the express purpose of grounding and fostering catechisms based on it for local needs and ordinary readers, Kreeft does just that, offering a thorough summary of Catholic doctrine, morality, and worship in a popular format with less technical language. He presents a systematic, organic synthesis of the essential and fundamental Catholic teachings in the light of the Second Vatican Council and the whole of the Church's Tradition.

This book is the most thorough, complete and popular catechetical summary of Catholic belief in print that is based on the universal Catechism.

10/27/2009: This book is used in my RCIA class and I absolutely love it. Kreeft takes the teachings straight from the Cathechism and the Bible and makes them easy to understand in contemporary language and thoughts. Every chapter delves in depth into a certain concept (i.e. Holy Spirit, Man, Jesus Christ) and provides great information on all.

In fact, many of my classmates have commented that Kreeft is able to say things in a way that makes them understand concepts they could not previously get. I don't think this would be a great read straight from cover to cover, however, this makes a great study book. It could be great inspiration for starting a prayer journal and reading one chapter a week, then commenting on it. Or just reading a chapter a week and reflecting on it throughout that week.

    Overall, this book is outstanding!

I Also Recommend: Catechism of the Catholic Church.

09/02/2002: In Catholic Christianity, Kreeft has summarized the beliefs of Roman Catholics as documented in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. He aims his book at Catholics or other Christians who wish to better understand the philosophies of the Church. As such, the book assumes a strong knowledge of the New Testament and is not a great reference for non-Christians. Kreeft?s writing is informative but dense. The book is difficult to read from cover-to-cover, and Kreeft even repeats some passages word-for-word in different sections. It would best be used as a reference book.
