Reviewer:David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description:This is the third edition of a compilation of facts relative to critical care practice and general internal medicine.
Purpose:A set of lists is provided.
Audience:Students or postgraduate trainees working on the medical floor or associated critical care practice may benefit from this work. The authors are from Harvard and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.
Features:The book is designed to fit in the shirt pocket. The content, after presentation of Advance Cardiac Life Support protocols, proceeds according to organ system with presentation of cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology, endocrine, neurologic, pulmonary and renal considerations. Oncology, toxicology and a 40-page reference on drugs used in internal medicine and the critical care unit conclude. The material is presented as phrase outlines with line drawings and ample use of tables. References are infrequent and generally represent secondary sources. There are no illustrations. A detailed table of contents describes subheadings within the presentation on each organ system. A brief subject index concludes.
Assessment:The third edition represents evolution over earlier versions. An increasing amount of data is provided on core therapies such as mechanical ventilation and pulmonary artery catheterization. Nonetheless, integration of data listed here is not provided despite availability of therapeutic algorithms particularly in the cardiopulmonary arena. This tool remains extremely popular with house officers who appreciate its portability.

04/27/2006: This book is quite simply the best use of your lab coat space for surviving residency, early moonlighting, even early attending. In crisis situations, this book has yet to let me down - in seven years of adult critical care practice.
