    06/02/2009: I always find it difficult to judge an anthology of literature as a whole when it contains such varied authors, but B&N's Great American Short Stories is certainly a rewarding collection. Standouts include Hawthorne's "The Birthmark," Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher," Melville's "Bartleby the Scrivener," James's "The Beast in the Jungle," Wharton's "The Other Two," Crane's "The Blue Hotel," Cather's "Paul's Case," Fitzgerald's "Winter Dreams," and Hemingway's "The End of Something." On the whole, this anthology, though merely a sampling of each great author, fulfills its purpose with aplomb and makes for enjoyable reading.

    03/03/2009: I have really enjoyed this collection of short stories. I haven't yet finished it because, as it explains in the intro, a goood short story is something that you should be able to read in one sitting but also have a message and impact in some way. I find that I've kept it out in the open and if I'm waiting on some odd thing, this just fits perfect in those little time increments. You know, you have 20 minutes but aren't a tv fan for a sitcom or what have you- just perfect for a short read before going to sleep. It's not actually alphabetical, it's just a good into to the short story and the great impact it can have. I'd recommend this one to anyone. If it came in a paperback edition, that would be perfect for carrying around while waiting at a Dr's appt, for getting caught at a drawbridge here in Florida, or just waiting on a friend.
