White (social work and family studies, University of British Columbia, Canada) addresses longstanding issues within the field of family studies and examines them from a social science perspective. He explores rational choice theory and transition theory, two diametrically different approaches to the family, and discusses how metatheories can assist in building theory. With advice on developing thesis research questions and material on identifying theory relevant to substantive research interests, the book is designed for use in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on family theory, research, and methods.
