Lighthouses of New England is both an exciting history and a tour guide, illustrating the fascinating development of the lighthouses of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Long Island.
At first glance, this seems to be a typical coffee-table book on a common subject, but there is much more to it than first appears. The stunning photographs are often taken from a peculiar angle, making lighthouses we've seen a hundred times look fresh. The text too takes us into areas not normally explored in a coffee-table book, such as the historical and technical (lamps, lenses, foghorns) background and the chapters on the lives of lighthouse keepers and the folklore of the beacons. While there are many other books with pretty pictures of lighthouses that provide historical and operational facts, and plenty of books on the folklore of the sea, no other title combines these elements so effortlessly. Marcus and Kelly have collaborated before on Boston: A CityLife Pictorial Guide. Recommended for public libraries and any house in New England with a coffee table.
