Intended as a comprehensive overview of qualitative research, crossing barriers of discipline, ideology, methodology, and culture, this volume contains 41 essaysall revised, many new for this edition (the first was published in 1994). It presents information on strategies of inquiry, methods for handling empirical data, and the practices of interpretation, evaluation, and representation. It also addresses recent and forthcoming changes in the field, and seeks to position itself as a work in transition, representative of those changes. Denzin teaches communications, sociology, and the humanities at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Lincoln is a professor of Higher Education at Texas A&M University. Annotation c. Competing paradigms in qualitative research/data mgmt & analysis methods/art & politics of interpretation/etc.
After the dry and dusty pages of positivism, how welcome it is to have a rich, state-of-the-art (or state-of-the-argument) guide for researchers to all phases of the naturalistic study of people in their social and cultural environment. The contributors examine the relevant histories, controversies, and current practices associated with each paradigm, strategy, and method. They also offer projections for the future--where specific paradigms, strategies, or methods will be 10 years from now. The volume is divided into six sections: locating the field; major paradigms and perspectives; strategies of inquiry; methods of collecting and analyzing empirical materials; the art of interpretation, evaluation, and presentation; and the future of qualitative research. 07/06/2004: I have to say that I was disheartened by the exorbitant price of this text, but the material inside is excellent. I used this text frequently in my research and dissertation construction.
