Mark Love - Children's Literature

This title by DK Publishing, a publisher of many excellent nonfiction books, provides a thorough, comprehensive overview of the Vietnam War, with particular emphasis on major battles, military operations, and significant leaders on both sides of the conflict. A timeline for each year of significant U.S. involvement is provided, with major events and leaders spotlighted. The book takes care to not only highlight the involvement of Americans, but of Vietnamese as well. In addition to comprehensive coverage of the war, the book also includes information on the origins of U.S. involvement, the Vietnamese war for independence from the French in the 1940s and 1950s, and the conclusion of the war between North and South Vietnam following the departure of U.S. forces in the early 1970s. The analysis included in the book is fair and objective, and the editor is careful to maintain that balanced tone throughout the book. The text is bolstered by a superb array of maps and photographs. This book should prove to be a valuable historical resource for high school students. 2004, DK Publishing, Ages 14 to 18.
