The Wyland Foundation is widely lauded by politicians and scientists alike for its practical insight and positive impact on our planet. Former Vice President Al Gore praised the group, saying, "Your organization makes an invaluable contribution to the effort to promote environmental awareness."
Hold Your Water is the latest in the organization's legacy of arming everyday people with straight-ahead insight and simple tips for keeping our planet blue. Written by two members of Wyland's staff, the book provides countless fascinating facts about our planet. For instance, did you realize that while two-thirds of the earth's surface is covered by water, only 3 percent of that water is safe to drink? And of that 3 percent, nearly two-thirds is locked up in polar ice caps?
The book offers easy ways for people to help preserve water and other related precious resources. Divided into more than 30 sections, this compendium illustrates how everyday activities such as car washing, showering, fertilizing-even 'pet poop' cleanup-can negatively impact the environment. It then delivers more than 100 tips and tidbits that will help you protect your planet.
Whether you are one of the nearly three-quarters of Americans who consider themselves environmentalists, or you just want to know more about the world in which you live, Hold Your Water is a book worth holding on to.
The Wyland Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting conservation through education programs, community service, and environmental art. The Foundation supports up to 100 conservation, scientific research, and education groups each year. Its founder, known simply as Wyland, is the world's premier marine life artist. He lives in Hawaii and California.

05/28/2006: If you really think about it - and most people don't - water is the basis of everything that is dear to us. The food we eat, the cars we drive, even the people we love (our bodies are more than 60 percent water) are comprised of water. I bought this book in the store, along with some new fiction, thinking I'd pick up a few tidbits to make 'cocktail' conversation. The book had cute graphics and made some environmental topics easy to understand - but after breezing through it, i realized the breadth of this topic. It truly does touch everything - and we haven't fully understood the cumulative impact of everything we do on this planet. The last thing any of us probably worries about is water. But one of the main points of this book was that water is quickly becoming one of the biggest environmental issues we have to face, and lets us know that some of the little things we do here at home or at work could have earth-changing affects thousands of miles away. Aside from giving me pause, i found lots of simple things I can do to change the track our planet is on. Most of the tips are pretty easy, although a few really require you to take a stand. But the idea is that it's up to you. Just do something, anything. If everybody read this book, I could only imagine what an improvement we could make.
