An overview of what occupational therapy is and how it is applied in the United States is provided. It is also meant to be used as a reference book. Written primarily for occupational therapy students, it is also useful for healthcare students in general, as well as beginning occupational therapy practitioners. The photographic illustrations are, in some examples, only marginally acceptable. It is difficult, especially with high information books, to include an adequate amount of inviting images that specifically relate to the topic. This deficit is offset by the affordable cost of the book, which is an important consideration for students. When used as a quick reference, the index takes some getting used to, but the book is rich in topics and details. This is a very useful and invaluable reference for the serious occupational therapy student who seeks an overview of occupational therapy, how it has evolved, and what its future holds. Case histories are well presented, explaining the clinical experience of both the therapist and the client. Clinical reasoning and the multidimensional aspects of the ever changing human system are present and well documented. Chapters highlight the importance of occupational therapist's need to see the clients as individuals, with ties to cultural, socioeconomic, and family systems. The impact of environment is emphasized as an important aspect of function, dysfunction, and rehabilitation. Chapters showing remediation in clinical compensation givevaluable insight and inspiration to the beginning occupational therapy student.
