    Synopsis

This brilliant multiple biography is centered on Lincoln's mastery of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the nation's history.

The New York Times Sunday Book Review - James M. McPherson

More books about Abraham Lincoln line the shelves of libraries than about any other American. Can there be anything new to say about our 16th president? Surprisingly, the answer is yes. Having previously offered fresh insights into Lyndon Johnson, the Kennedys and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Doris Kearns Goodwin has written an elegant, incisive study of Lincoln and leading members of his cabinet that will appeal to experts as well as to those whose knowledge of Lincoln is an amalgam of high school history and popular mythology.

11/21/2009: This is a great book. It really transported me back to those days and gave me a greater appreciation for what incredible men Abraham Lincoln, Seward, Stanton, et. al. really were. The obstacles they faced really make our's today pale in comparison. the writing is excellent and I looked forward to picking it up every day.

11/20/2009: This book may or may not be a great historical piece. I'm sure there are factual errors up for debate and that there are perspectives that the author puts forward that all will not agree with. Additionally, there have been so many books written about Abraham Lincoln that it is difficult to imagine anything new being revealed.

All that notwithstanding, "Team of Rivals" succeeds mainly by shedding light on Lincoln's single greatest attributes .. his humiliity and his willingness to succeed by taking advantage of the talents of other successful men. He was able to accomplish this by letting go of his own ego and avoiding the partisanship to typical of politicians then and now.

Abraham Lincoln was a consumate politician by the time he ascended to the Presidency, but he was an absolute neophite to the process of governing a nation.

He knew this and accepted the fact that he could not do it alone and that in order to succeed, he needed the very men who had fought him so vigorously for the office.

This is a book that focuses on the "power of the team" and the effectiveness of a great team leader. This is where the lesson lies and this is why the book rises above the average Lincoln biography.
