    Synopsis

When a passenger check-in desk at London's Heathrow Airport disappears in a ball of orange flame, the explosion is deemed an act of God. But which god, wonders holistic detective Dirk Gently? What god would be hanging around Heathrow trying to catch the 3:37 to Oslo? And what has this to do with Dirk's latest--and late-- client, found only this morning with his head revolving atop the hit record "Hot Potato"? Amid the hostile attentions of a stray eagle and the trauma of a very dirty refrigerator, super-sleuth Dirk Gently will once again solve the mysteries of the universe...

    Publishers Weekly

``The British author of the Hitchhiker trilogy and other immensely popular lunacies, Adams permits no whiff of common sense to spoil his new novel, which combines fantasy, hilarity and creeping horrors,'' remarked PW . Here, sleuth Dirk Gently investigates a lawyer and an advertiser who possess the soul of the god Odin. ``The plot's ramifications are marvelous, bloody and irresistible.'' (Jan.)

02/09/2009: Fantastic book by one of the best authors in our era. A mystery that keeps you very confused until near the very end. As mentioned in the title, a very irreverent book with a lot of dark humor (hard to give examples without ruining the story, but I laughed and cringed several times!). If you're a fan of the Hitchhiker's Guide series it is very similar humor.

05/30/2006: A great book in the style of the Hitchhiker?s guide to galaxy, Douglas Adams? Long dark tea-time of soul is a surprisingly ?different? pseudo-detective story. As with all his other works, this novel is characterized by an excellent, quirky humor ? Douglas Adams being an expert with short, two-worded puns that have great effect and leave you laughing more than other authors could in a few pages. Even the main character?s name is a little joke on its own ? Dirk Gently (?stab gently?). As another trademark of the author, the novel also has a very complex plot that doesn?t explicitly ?end? and you are left on your own to figure out what happened. These two main features can make the story very confusing ? especially for those who haven?t read any of Adams? work (or don?t have a good ?reading experience?). Long dark tea-time of the soul is the second book in its series, but because of its author?s craftiness it can be easily read and enjoyed on its own. The main character is Dirk Gently, a ?holistic? detective. Dirk (much like Arthur Dent) is put in many humorous situations and does a lot of silly things: he follows cars when he?s lost he has a war with his cleaning lady over who should open the ?looming fridge? and chases the green-eyed monster. This is a great novel, but the way you?ll enjoy it mostly depends on your expectations. For the Hitchhiker fan, Long dark tea-time of soul may seem like an unrealized clone - the humor is in the same style, the plot structure similar and so on. Dirk is not Arthur or Ford, and time-warps can?t compare with the ?Improbability drive?, but if you take this book on its own you will really enjoy it, maybe even more than the Hitchhiker series.
