From the Publisher
This complete foundational text and reference covers the core curriculum for radiography students with vivid illustrations and thoroughly updated content. In the 4th edition of this highly-respected text, content is updated and modified to convey the pathology knowledge radiographers need at the appropriate comprehension level for better understanding. The book covers all of the essential information radiography students need, including disease processes, their radiographic appearance, and their treatment.
- Radiographers Notes in every chapter provide helpful suggestions for producing optimal radiographs for each organ system and teach students to deal effectively with varying patient needs.
- Thorough coverage of alternative imaging modalities encourages readers to think about other imaging modalities that may be needed to ensure proper diagnosis.
- Summary of diseases, their locations, their radiographic appearance, and treatment tables provide a review tool for students and a quick reference guide for practitioners.
- Treatment sections provide useful background on certain treatment and prognosis information for a more thorough understanding of pathology.
- Organized by body systems, information is easily located and convenient for studying one area at a time in a logical sequence.
- Written for radiographers, the text provides the most up-to-date, logically organized presentation of radiographic pathology available.
- Enhanced imaging appearances include multiple modalities such as SPECT, PET, CT, MR, ultrasound, and fusion.
- Now covers the pathology of hepatitis variations, SARS, anthrax, and Marfan's syndrome for more comprehensiveinformation.
- An expanded discussion of how CT and MR are used to diagnose pathological processes helps students understand the benefits of using these scans.
- New and updated radiograph images of the newly added pathologies.
- More images for alternative modalities, including nuclear, ultrasound, PET, CT, and vascular imaging.

This book provides an introduction to the basicprinciples of pathology and basic radiographic pathology. The firstedition was published in 1990. The purpose is to introduce studentradiographers to the basic principles of pathology and the radiographicappearance of specific disease processes. It also provides a textbookfor the required course for student radiographers. The authors haveprovided the radiologic technology academic community with a greatlyneeded resource. This book is intended for student radiographers;however, experienced radiographers could enhance their understanding ofdisease processes too. The authors are recognized authorities withinthe radiologic technology community. Overall, the radiographs aregood; however, in the new edition, some appear slightly darker. Theinclusion of outdated exams (i.e., bronchograms) and really unusualpathology might not be needed in a basic textbook. The layout of thebook is excellent, covering the pathology by going through eachanatomical system. The addition of answers to the chapter questions wasappreciated by my students. This is the only textbook is availablefor a radiographic pathology course, designed for studentradiographers. The authors have done an excellent job in providing acomprehensive overview of a very complex subject. The use of thistextbook in a radiographic pathology course will greatly enhance thestudents' understanding.

Description:This book covers the basic pathology of the human body using a systematic approach and details radiographic imaging of the diseases. Although the basic pathology does not change, this fourth edition contains expanded information and a helpful chapter on specialized imaging techniques. The previous edition was published in 2003.
Purpose:The purpose is to educate radiologic technology students and radiologic technologists about disease processes of the human body systems and organs. It also prepares them to appropriately radiograph the pathology and to recognize the radiographic appearance of specific diseases. Recognizing and appropriately imaging specific diseases is an important part of the field of radiologic technology. This excellent book meets the objectives very well.
Audience:The book does an excellent job of explaining the pathologic conditions at a level that radiologic technology students can easily understand. It also would be very good for radiographers to review or augment what they learned in school. Radiographers who have a clear understanding of pathology become more competent members of the healthcare team. The authors are an excellent team. Ronald Eisenberg is an MD and Nancy Johnson is a radiologic technologist.
Features:An excellent introductory chapter is followed by a chapter on specialized imaging techniques. Subsequent chapters cover the pathology system by system (i.e. respiratory system, nervous system, endocrine system) . This book is organized well (the Radiographer Notes are an excellent way to begin each chapter) ,and the summary tables are helpful. The many pictures of radiographs are what set this book apart, however. They are collectively the best images I have seen in a pathology text. Many of them are large and are really helpful to students trying to recognize the pathology on a radiograph. Now that this book contains a specific chapter on specialized imaging techniques, I can't see any shortcomings. It is all around an excellent learning tool.
Assessment:This is the best radiographic pathology book on the market. It offers the information at the right level for students. Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, 7th edition, Kumar et al. (Elsevier, 2005) goes into much more depth and is written at a level that is difficult for radiologic technology students to understand. Radiographic Pathology for Technologists, 5th edition, Kowalczyk and Mace (Elsevier, 2009) , is written at a more understandable level but it doesn't cover as many conditions and diseases. Also, neither of these has the excellent radiographic images that this book contains. The many new features in this fourth edition justify replacing the previous edition.
