Reviewer:Harley G. Ginsberg, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description:This fifth edition of a book sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association provides an update on the essentials for effective resuscitation of the newborn. It replaces the previous 2000 edition. The educational material, when mastered, may be used in conjunction with the practical exam to qualify the student for certification in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
Purpose:The fifth edition was necessary as a result of evidence-based medicinal analysis indicating that changes were required to improve the outcome of newborn resuscitative efforts. Perhaps just as important as the updates are new chapters devoted to the resuscitation of the premature newborn and ethical considerations of resuscitation. The author's objectives are readily accomplished.
Audience:This book should be read (and the lessons completed) by anyone responsible for the care of a newborn immediately after birth. While medical and nursing students would find the book useful (in order to comprehend what is taking place during an observed resuscitation) , this book should be in the library of all pediatricians and family practice physicians (who attend deliveries) , obstetricians, pediatric and obstetric residents, anesthesiologists who treat expectant mothers in delivery, as well as neonatal fellows, neonatal nurse practitioners, and neonatologists. The authors are renowned in the field of neonatal medicine.
Features:The ABCDs (airway, breathing, circulation and drug administration) are all addressed following a chapter on preparation forresuscitation. The book has added chapters on preterm resuscitation and care at the end of life (for situations where resuscitation may not be appropriate or is not successful) . A DVD that accompanies this book presents the information in a dynamic video format. Video of actual births and resuscitative measures used provides students with a very graphic representation of neonatal resuscitation.
Assessment:The continued refinement and universal improvement of neonatal resuscitation requires dissemination of updated information and a format for instruction. This book and, especially, the DVD provide the student with an opportunity to be engaged in the learning process, review the new information, take the written exam and proceed to the practical portion of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program for certification. The algorithms for medical therapies and the pharmacologic treatment recommendations have changed and all of those providing care for newborns at the time of delivery need to remain current.
