06/30/2003: I love the pictures. They are just so beautiful. There is also a little peom to compliment each of the illustrations. For example: To English folk the mighty oak/ Is England's noblest tree/ Its hard-grained wood is strong and good/ As English hearts can be/ And would you know how oak trees grow?/ The secret may be told/ You do but need to plant a seed/ One acorn in the mould/ For even so long years ago/ Were born the oaks of old

08/07/2002: Each poem was done by Barker after the picture, and they do hint at the beauty of great poetry, and at the knowledge of nature (with footnotes about the flowers here and there, as well). Basically Barker would paint a flower, say a jack-in-the-pulpit, drawing with it a 'fairy' seen by her as the spirit of that flower (drawn from life, using a child from her sister's nursery school -- you can see individual children appear repeatedly, with different outfits made, it is suggested, by Barker, and wings fashioned by her too). Each poem then elucidates her view of the pairing of fairy and its flower. Enchanting and lovely, this books makes one thirsty for all sorts of knowledge and experience, although itself a window on abstraction and mystery. This book would be great in association with a pressed-flowers project, or the Barker 'Flower Fairies' coloring book.
