    Biography

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but even as he studied these classics he was creating a set of his own.

11/21/2009: Very few books are worth the fancy boxed special edition, but as a beloved classic, the hobbit certainly warrants the extra cash spent. though not as rich a story perhaps as the lord of the rings trilogy (which is also worth the deluxe edition) i've always preferred the hobbit. it was written in a more light-hearted fashion and is by far more charming as a result as opposed to the dark and brooding trilogy. I like how each chapter, almost, can function as its own mini story as the party gets "out of the frying pan and into the fire" time and again. each chapter makes for a nice bedtime story as an easy paced read. and of course i just love that reticent hero Bilbo Baggins.

11/18/2009: Having first been introduced to The Hobbit in 1967 I found myself drawn into the realm of Middle Earth and the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and company. Since that first reading I have re-read the book a number of times. Through the years I have collected several "dramatized" versions of this timeless classic. I have always looked for, but was unable to find, an unabridged rendition of the book until now. Bob Inglis' masterful reading makes each character spring to life as your imagination is stirred with colorful images of the unfolding adventure. This is a must for all fans of J.R.R. Tolkien.
