    Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Julie A Warren, RN, MSN, CCRN, NE-BC (Presbyterian Healthcare Services)
Description:This tenth edition of an introductory pediatric nursing textbook has a number of special features, many of which are complemented by the CD that comes with the book, including skills, data cues, home care tips, critical thinking snapshots, health promotion summaries, care plans, and self-assessment quizzes. Also included is a companion website for students. The previous edition was published in 2005.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide an updated pediatric textbook for LPN students that can be used alone or in conjunction with other LPN texts published by Elsevier. These "LPN Threads" make it easier for students and instructors to incorporate multiple books into the fast-paced LPN curriculum. Because healthcare practices are always evolving and changing, updated texts such as this are needed.
Audience:The book is intended for LPN students but contains some key features to assist LPN instructors as well.
Features:This is an introduction to all aspects of pediatric nursing including disease pathophysiology, medical and nursing management, caregiver teaching points, prevention and health promotion, and growth/development. Unique features include a companion CD with video clips of pediatric assessments, animations, and pronunciation of key terminology that correspond to the material covered in each chapter. The chapter critical thinking questions are also well done. The only shortcoming is that the video clips show only normal assessment findings. Future editions may want to add abnormal assessmentfindings.
Assessment:This is an excellent resource for nursing students. Its companion CD and website are an improvement over previous editions that make the publication more useful to both students and instructors than many other similar nursing textbooks.
