    Synopsis

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

    Publishers Weekly

In this tantalizing SF thriller, planet-hopping parasites are inserting their silvery centipede selves into human brains, curing cancer, eliminating war and turning Earth into paradise. But some people want Earth back, warts and all, especially Melanie Stryder, who refuses to surrender, even after being captured in Chicago and becoming a host for a "soul" called Wanderer. Melanie uses her surviving brain cells to persuade Wanderer to help search for her loved ones in the Arizona desert. When the pair find Melanie's brother and her boyfriend in a hidden rebel cell led by her uncle, Wanderer is at first hated. Once the rebels accept Wanderer, whom they dub Wanda, Wanda's whole perspective on humanity changes. While the straightforward narrative is short on detail about the invasion and its stunning aftermath, it shines with romantic intrigue, especially when a love triangle (or quadrangle?!) develops for Wanda/Melanie. 10-city author tour. 12/05/2009: At first, I thought this book sounded really weird, but I wanted to read it because I love Meyer's Twilight series. Once I started it, I agree that it's a little hard to tell what's going on at first. But just keep reading, and you won't be able to put it down. I never cared much for science fiction, but her books are extremely readable and interesting. I would read this one over and over again, like the Twilight series. I wish she would write a sequel!

    I Also Recommend: Twilight.

12/04/2009: When Wanderer and Melanie Stryder become two minds in one body, both of them are completely overwhelmed. Wander is part of an alien species called souls. They use other species in the universe as hosts and take over those planets. But Wanderer gets Melanie as a host and she refuses to die away. Melanie's thoughts and beliefs are still with Wanderer in Melanie's body. Wanderer hears her and sometimes Melanie even acts on the body without Wanderer's control. Handling each other proves to be one of the most difficult tasks Wanderer has had to overcome in her seven different hosts. The human emotions are the worst though, the most intense and overpowering of any other species. But soon Wanderer and Melanie both decide to venture out and find what could be some of Melanie's remaining family. This puts their relationship to the test when they almost die in the hot desert. But they are saved and taken hostage in a colony of "wild humans". Melanie and Wanderer find the two people that mean more than life to them, Melanie's brother, Jamie, and her lover, Jared. But tensions fly, as all of the humans want the "parasite" dead, and react by trying themselves. Overtime, things settle down and Wanderer becomes accepted as one of them. But what no one expected was all of the heartbreak and adventure that come with loving a soul.

This book is a very exciting read if you enjoy science-fiction romances. There are twists and turns around every corner with lots of exciting activity to keep you reading. The beginning is a little slow and confusing, trying to understand the new world these aliens have created on earth. But after chapter five, everything starts falling into place and becomes clear. I would recommend this book to someone just looking for another good read. It will keep you interested and almost never slows down. I would not recommend reading this book more than once just due to all of the surprises already being revealed. Once you know what happens, it isn't very exciting. Save this book for a rainy day to bring out when your bored and it'll make a great fit in anyone's life.
