    Synopsis

This Spiral® Manual provides a practical approach to the diagnosis and medical management of newborns. Chapters cover maternal, fetal, and neonatal problems and common neonatal procedures. An outline format provides quick access to a large amount of information, and the outline headings are standardized in this edition. The updated coverage includes new information on fetal assessment, survival of premature infants, and perinatal asphyxia and new guidelines on neonatal jaundice.

The popular appendices include effects of maternal drugs on the fetus, maternal medications during lactation, and NICU medication guidelines. A neonatal dosing chart and intubation/sedation guidelines appear on the inside covers.

    "Doody's Core Titles™ 2009."

    Annotation

"Comprehensive and updated, this guide, arranged in an outline format, fully discusses well-baby information, including physical examination and nutrition...part of the Little, Brown Spiral Manual Series." Appropriate for: Neonatologists, Neonatal Nurses.

Reviewer:Jay P. Goldsmith, MD (Tulane University School of Medicine)
Description:With this sixth edition, the authorship of this neonatal care book has been expanded from the Harvard neonatal group to include Baylor contributors as two of the senior editors/authors have moved to Texas (Eichenwald, Stark) . Although the book has continued to grow in size (now 762 pages) with each edition, it is still concise and benefits from an outline format. This edition follows the previous one by four years (2004) .
Purpose:The manual describes "current and practical approaches to evaluation and management" of the fetus and neonate. In previous editions, this was one of three or four abbreviated manuals that residents could carry with them and use as a quick reference while on rotation in the NICU. This edition has become much more inclusive and less directive for these potential users. The authors' objectives have been met, but the book now becomes a softcover competitor of the major neonatal textbooks.
Audience:It is aimed at residents, fellows, attendings, and advanced practice nurses working in the NICU. It is fairly comprehensive, although somewhat less detailed than the standard neonatal textbooks. Besides the standard neonatal topics, the book covers developmental care of the sick newborn and death and bereavement counseling and even includes a small chapter on Lyme disease. The sections on fetal assessment, neonatal resuscitation, and jaundice have been extensively revised. The editors are well known authorities in the field, although some of the section authors are less well known.
Features:The manual covers allthe standard topics of neonatal care in a concise outline format. Much of the book is organized by disease state, thus allowing the reader to quickly find a topic in a clinical situation. Most helpful for young clinicians are sections on bleeding, use of blood products, and infectious diseases. The helpful appendixes include information on maternal drug use during lactation and NICU medication guidelines. Because the book has been significantly expanded, the print is somewhat small. While the many tables and some drawn figures are quite helpful, there are no pictures and the few radiographs, found only in the cardiology section, are too small and not diagnostic.
Assessment:This manual is more comprehensive than the other softcover abbreviated neonatal handbooks Neonatology: Management, Procedures, On-Call Problems, Diseases, and Drugs, 5th edition, Gomella (McGraw-Hill, 2004) , Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care, 6th edition, Merenstein and Gardner (Elsevier, 2006) , Michigan Manual of Neonatal Intensive Care, 3rd edition, Donn (Elsevier, 2003) . It is extremely well done, but because it is not directed at specific problems, it may become less useful to resident clinicians as an emergency resource when on service in the NICU. (For example, the Gomella has a section devoted to "on call" problems.) Certainly, this latest edition is needed as the field of perinatal medicine is changing rapidly.
