This textbook of surgical diseases is the tenth biennial edition, succeeding the previous edition published in 1991. It is intended as a text for medical students, a reference for house officers and nonsurgeon physicians, and a guide to current management strategies for surgeons. This is an excellent core textbook to fill the needs of junior-level medical students. The organization and standardized format for each disease are also useful for house staff with limited time, but the book does not provide depth for use by practicing surgeons. The authors are credible authorities, and most are associated with UCSF. The book is structured by organ systems, but also includes general information on pre/postoperative care and complications, wound healing, infections, fluids, nutrition, anesthesia, shock, and other topics. The chapters on subspecialty areas such as urology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, transplantation, neurosurgery, hand surgery, and plastic surgery are useful introductions for students. The black-and-white illustrations, tables, and figures are clear and complement the text. Several chapters, such as those on cardiac and gastrointestinal diseases, are extensively revised in this edition, and the references include both pertinent trials and recent review articles. Notable attention is given to new minimally invasive therapies. Junior clerks find this is an outstanding textbook because the format is readily digestible and includes the general and subspecialty chapters. The new edition is necessary and includes current updates in the rapidly evolving fields of general surgery. All medical libraries should acquire this book, which is an outstanding text for medical students.
