    Synopsis

Left on her own when her family dies in a terrible disaster, fifteen-year-old Green is haunted by loss and by the past. Struggling to survive physically and emotionally in a place where nothing seems to grow and ashes are everywhere, Green retreats into the ruined realm of her garden. But in destroying her feelings, she also begins to destroy herself, erasing the girl she'd once been as she inks darkness into her skin. It is only through a series of mysterious encounters that Green can relearn the lessons of love and begin to heal enough to tell her story.

09/29/2009: Green Angel, by Alice Hoffman, is about a 15-year-old girl who loses her family in a horrific disaster. Green, who is now left on her own, is haunted by her loss and by the past. As she comes to realize that her future is not what she expected, she is forced to survive alone in a world that she no longer recognizes. In a place where nothing seems to exist but ashes, she retreats back into the ruins of her garden. She begins to destroy herself as she struggles to survive in this unknown world, erasing the girl she once was. She inks darkness into her skin, penetrating her pain and sorrow into the aura around her. Time and inexplicable encounters help Green find a way to relearn the lessons of love and faith. Only when she begins to pull through her darkness and pain will she be able to tell her story of her unforgettable past.

Green Angel is one of my favorite books. Alice Hoffman has become one of my favorite authors as well. She has written several books that I have enjoyed including The Foretelling and Incantations. The reason why Green Angel is one of my favorite books is because it lets the reader see how the future can change in just an instant. It demonstrates the hardships of life on a teenager left to face the world on his\her own. The future is not set in stone, but changes with every second and with every thought that passes through one's mind. The unexpected must always be expected. Other books that are written with a similar theme or style are The Foreshadowing by Marcus Sedgwick and The Black Tattoo by Sam Enthoven.
