    There are biographies of literary icons, and then there's James Hawes' s Why You Should Read Kafka Before You Waste Your Life. In this case, you can judge a book by its cover. An ironic play on Kafka's story "Metamorphosis" has the insect lounging cross-legged, reading a bug-sized version of this book that's illustrated with a postage-stamp sized photo of "our hero" brooding darkly. Though Hawes holds a Ph.D. in German literature, his content is anything but dry or academic. Instead, he reveals Kafka the man in an extended, enthusiastic conversation, full of rambling asides and copious footnotes that read like conspiratorial whispers: "In the summer of 1913, Kafka bangs endlessly on about 'necessity,' that favorite concept of every German since Hegel who ever planned to do something morally dubious." Hawes takes great pains to put the oft-misunderstood Kafka in the context of his time by offering a snapshot of the sweeping changes that overtook Mitteleuropa in the early 20th century.     Everybody knows the face of Franz Kafka, whether they have read any of his works or not. And that brooding face carries instant images: bleak and threatening visions of an inescapable bureaucracy, nightmarish transformations, uncanny predictions of the Holocaust. But while Kafka’s genius is beyond question, the image of a mysterious, sickly, shadowy figure who was scarcely known in his own lifetime bears no resemblance to the historical reality. Franz Kafka was a popular and well-connected millionaire’s son who enjoyed good-time girls, brothels, and expensive porn, who landed a highly desirable state job that pulled in at least $90,000 a year in today’s dollars for a six-hour day, who remained a loyal member of Prague’s German-speaking Imperial elite right to the end, and whose work was backed by a powerful literary clique.

    In a swaggering, sometimes condescending and often contentious introduction to Kafka, Hawes draws on the writer's stories, diaries and letters, as well as contemporary cultural documents as he asks the real Kafka to please stand up. Rather than the conventional portrait of a lonely figure whose day job deprived him of time to write-an image he calls "the K.-myth"-Hawes discovers a confident lawyer who never lacked friends and whose early writings were admired and promoted by Rilke, Hermann Hesse and Robert Musil. Hawes also takes on the view that Kafka feared women and sex; he underscores Kafka's "compulsive" brothel visits; and like other well-to-do young men of his class, Hawes says, Kafka had a sexual liaison with a working-class woman. Hawes also makes much of his revelation that Kafka read highbrow pornography. More original is Hawes's reinterpretation of The Metamorphosis by finding its source in Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther. Although this book will provoke many Kafka scholars, its invitation to see Kafka in a new light encourages a fresh understanding of one of the 20th century's most enigmatic writers. B&w photos.     James Hawes is a novelist and Kafka scholar with a Ph.D. in German literature. He is the author of A White Merc with Fins, White Powder, Green Light, and Speak for England. As an undergraduate at Oxford, Hawes was allowed---uniquely---to handle the original manuscript of Kafka's The Castle. He lives in Cardiff, Wales.
