    Synopsis

This classic book, written 17 years ago but still selling more than 13,000 copies every year, has been completely updated and expanded by the author.

"I used to drink," writes John Bradshaw,"to solve the problems caused by drinking. The more I drank to relieve my shame-based loneliness and hurt, the more I felt ashamed."

Shame is the motivator behind our toxic behaviors: the compulsion, co-dependency, addiction and drive to superachieve that breaks down the family and destroys personal lives. This book has helped millions identify their personal shame, understand the underlying reasons for it, address these root causes and release themselves from the shame that binds them to their past failures.

09/26/2009: This book has saved my life! I am currently still using it and has helped me beyond words! It not only details how the problem develops and the sources, but also gives excellent exercises and strategies for reducing the problem of toxic shame. It's also based on the author's personal experiences along with the research which puts it on a real personal level and shows immense recovery. I highly recommend this book and suggest it be read over and over again and kept as a major resource.

04/01/2009: This book is both informative and, for it's time, innovative. Bradshaw makes relevant the past traumatic events in one's life which has lead to the crippling hold Shame has over them. A great source/resource for anyone who is or has anyone in their life being held back by self-shaming actions.
