    Synopsis

Step right up! Award-winning journalist Melody Petersen shows how America has become the world's greatest medicine show

The New York Times - Janet Maslin

…an angrily illuminating book on drug-related corporate malfeasance and patient peril…Ms. Petersen compiles this data in anecdotal style, even though they would have hit harder in more crystallized, succinct form. But although she rambles and repeats herself at times, this material remains tough, cogent and disturbing enough to have a serious impact. So do her recommendations at the end of this chilling investigation.

06/23/2009: If you are involved in healthcare, either as a practitioner or consumer, you must read this book. It is a well researched, interesting, and frightening look at the power of the drug companies. It reveals their marketing techniques and business tactics. Ms. Petersen explains how these companies are reaching their primary goal of making money, and why this conflicts with the goals of healthcare. It is focused on the problems of the industry, so some people may find it biased. But I think we get so much pro-pharmaceutical information, we need to be educated on the problems. This book is a worthy attempt to correct that situation.

The only reason I give this book 4 stars is because it may be too medically-oriented for some people. But if you have any interest or basic knowledge of medicine, it should be an easy read. Ms. Petersen does make the information relevant to just about anyone.
