Synopsis

He's the ultimate showman in the world's greatest spectator sport -- a controversial, charismatic figure who has dominated Ultimate Fighting for more than ten years as one of its most exciting and skillful stars.

But for Tito Ortiz, life very nearly took a different path. Growing up in Huntington Beach, California, Ortiz spent part of his childhood living in motels and in the backs of other people's houses, as his heroin-addicted parents were forced to leave one apartment after another. By the time he was in sixth grade, he had dabbled in almost every drug available, and his early youth involved time in juvenile detention centers, a string of petty crimes, and a stint in a local gang. Then, in high school, Tito discovered wrestling -- the perfect match for this tough, streetwise, ambitious kid.

Tito made his mixed martial arts debut at UFC 13 in 1997, winning his first fight in twenty-two seconds. In 2000, he was chosen as a light heavyweight contender in UFC 25 and took the belt, successfully defending it five times in the following three years.

Tito Ortiz pulls no punches as he recounts his journey from Huntington Beach Bad Boy to UFC superstardom -- his difficult upbringing, his first marriage and struggles with fidelity, his battles with the UFC, his career highs and lows, and his current happy relationship with former porn star Jenna Jameson. An inspirational story of beating the odds, and an incredible glimpse into just what it takes to win in the world's most brutal arena, This Is Gonna Hurt is raw, frank, funny, and as fearless as its subject.

06/08/2009: Who is the real Tito? I surely had no idea. He's cocky on TV and gets bad-mouthed by other fighters in interviews and in their books. It turns out Tito is a father, an actor, a serious businessman and a entrepreneur on top of being one of the UFC's biggest names.

Tito's biography is one you wont soon forget. He lets it all out and talks about his crazy childhood and MMA career.

This book is easy to read and definitely clears up some of the rumors about him that we (MMA fans) often hear.

Good book, great stories! For any Tito Ortiz fan and all MMA fans!

12/01/2008: Tito Ortiz with Mark Shapiro: This is gonna hurt

Tito Ortiz starts his biography as a kid growing up in Huntington Beach, California where I soon learned why they call him the "Huntington Beach Bad Boy". Tito had to overcome obstacles to become a UFC fighter. He was was a decorated wrestler in high school and college, this kept him off the streets and out of gang and drug life. The plot of this story is about Tito's struggles on his way to becoming one of the most known UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship)fighters.

Tito goes to Big Bear, CA to train for his first professional UFC fight against Wes Albritten. Tito is cocky but is still under pressure to win. Tito wins his first professional UFC fight by TKO and surprises the UFC world. Tito works hard and trains even harder winning most of his 21 fights by knockout.

The theme of this story is to never give up on your dreams, believe in yourself, and never back down.

I like this book because it reminds you to never give up and I NEVER give up! It also made me realize that working hard and being determined can get you everywhere in life.

I connected to this book because I have overcome things like Tito has. If this sounds like a book you would like I also recommend another book I read -- "Ric Flair: To Be The Man". Just like This is gonna hurt, this is a biography of a person struggling to become champion.

I Also Recommend: Iceman: My Fighting Life, Made in America: The Most Dominant Champion in UFC History, Ric Flair: To Be the Man, Becoming the Natural: My Life In and Out of the Cage, Little Evil: One Ultimate Fighter's Rise to the Top.
