He is a four-time U.S Champion, the 1989 Western Hemisphere Champion and a ten-time member of the U.S. chess Olympiad team. 11/19/2006: This is rather a 'mid-level' book for someone who is looking to add on their their basic knowledge of chess. Concepts taken from practical play are stewed into examples and broken down. Instead of going over complete games (another excellent way to improve) the author focuses on a variety of themes he fees are important. A good, but not great book.

11/07/2006: Instead of giving full games and pointing out things at every part of the game, Seirawan takes parts of games to show different types of strategy that he feels are important. Just like the rest of the 'Winning Chess' series by Seirawan, he gives good detail and is clear. Learning tactics and traps (in openings) will help improve your game along with understanding longer term strategy for planning ahead that 'Winning Chess Strategies' focuses on.
