Synopsis

J. K. Rowling fills her books with references to history, myths, legends and literature. Here are the stories behind the stories – the astonishing origins of magical creatures, the clues to hidden meanings in names, and stories of real-life wizards mentioned in the Harry Potter series.

Time Magazine

05/31/2007: Yeah sure its about mythology, but all the creatures that are in there are in the Harry Potter books. So don't be putting it down just because they have gotten a bit to Greek happy, doesn't mean that it isn't significant! I like it

05/04/2007: This treasure trove of facts and theories is a great way to refresh your memory on books 1-6, especially this close to the publication of book 7! Plus it was something to tide me over until this summer. Its reference-style setup is easy to use if you're re-reading the other books and want to delve more deeply into the story than you did the first time you read them. This book has gotten me hooked on the expansive 'Guides to Harry Potter' genre.
