Reviewer:M. Isabel L. Crisostomo, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description:This book is the culmination of the American Association of Sleep Technologists' (AAST) goal to advance the practice of polysomnography and promote consistency in its use by providing a comprehensive text on sleep technology.
Purpose:The purpose is to serve as an educational resource for sleep technologists in order to ensure that qualified sleep technologists will have training in sleep medicine and sleep technology that will ensure the provision of the highest quality of care to patients with sleep disorders.
Audience:Although targeted for sleep technologists in particular, the book can also be used by students or clinicians who wish to have an understanding of sleep technology. The editors are prominent authorities in the field who have authored a variety of books on sleep technology as well as other books in the field of sleep medicine.
Features:Each of the 78 chapters is authored by authorities in the field of sleep medicine. Chapters range from comprehensive reviews of sleep physiology and cardiopulmonary aspects of sleep to discussions of sleep disorders, pediatric sleep, interventions and therapeutics, and sleep research in the sleep center. Detailed reviews of po1ysomnography procedures and other procedures such as multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing, and actigraphy together with patient preparation prior to procedures as well as recognition and scoring of events are included. Specific sections are devoted to the establishment and management of a sleep center. The editors acknowledge that at thetime they were writing the book, revisions were to be made to the acquisition and scoring of polysomnographic data that were not going to be available prior to publication.
Assessment:This is a useful book, not only for sleep technologists, but also for other students of sleep medicine or clinicians who desire a better understanding of sleep technology. I recommend this highly as a good resource for these audiences. It compares favorably to other similar books, and may be better, given its comprehensive coverage of sleep technology and its use in sleep disorders evaluation and management.
