Description:This is a second edition of a pocket text that presents real life surgical diseases and their optimal management.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a book designed for medical students to help prepare for surgical rounds and USMLE Part 2 examination.
Audience:Medical students on 3rd and 4th year surgery clerkships are the intended audience.
Features:The book presents 53 general surgical cases and is limited to the types of cases usually seen by a student rotating on a surgical service. Each case begins with a case report and several pertinent questions about the case at the particular stage of the disease, followed by the next step and a likely diagnosis. After providing the answers, the authors describe a general approach to the diagnosis and treatment of the surgical disease. This includes an approach to a disease, additional comprehensive questions, and pearls related to the particular disease. Pertinent information necessary to manage a patient as is prognosis of the patient. In addition to the comprehensive questions and pearls, appropriate references are given. The table of contents allows one to cross reference by a case number and by the type of disorder. The book covers a broad range of general surgical problems.
Assessment:This is intended to emphasize the principles to be applied in managing general surgery patients. For a student who is in a rush to prepare for a particular case or problem, this is a good way to become knowledgeable quickly. It follows the medical student objective format as put forth by theboards and accreditation agency, using problem-based cases which tie together symptoms and signs with a disease. It is a well done book and certainly accomplishes its goal of providing students with a large amount of information about a particular type of problem.
