    Synopsis

Macy's summer stretches before her, carefully planned and outlined. She will spend her days sitting at the library information desk. She will spend her evenings studying for the SATs. Spare time will be used to help her obsessive mother prepare for the big opening of the townhouse section of her luxury development.

But Macy's plans don't anticipate a surprising and chaotic job with Wish Catering, a motley crew of new friends, or . . . Wes. Tattooed, artistic, anything-but-expected Wes. He doesn't fit Macy's life at all&150so why does she feel so comfortable with him? So . . . happy? What is it about him that makes her let down her guard and finally talk about how much she misses her father, who died before her eyes the year before?

Sarah Dessen delivers a page-turning novel that carries readers on a roller coaster of denial, grief, comfort, and love as we watch a broken but resilient girl pick up the pieces of her life and fit them back together.

    Annotation

The summer following her father's death, Macy plans to work at the library and wait for her brainy boyfriend to return from camp, but instead she goes to work at a catering business where she makes new friends and finally faces her grief.

    Publishers Weekly

When her boyfriend goes away for the summer, Macy, still grieving for her recently deceased father, must make it on her own. "Dessen gracefully balances comedy with tragedy and introduces a complex heroine worth getting to know," according to PW. Ages 12-up. (Apr.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

November 20, 2009: The Truth about Forever is a realistic fiction novel by Sarah Dessen. I really enjoyed reading this book and thought it was extremely intriguing. I didn't want to stop reading or put the book down, always wanting to know more and what would happen next. The Truth about Forever takes place in modern day New York, and the main character is Macy Queen.

In the book, Macy is dealing with a major internal conflict: her father died. When he died Macy's life became organized, quiet, and perfect; both Macy and her mother trying to be strong and independent for the world. But, throughout the book Macy is realizing that she is not perfect and really doesn't want to be. Macy is trying to break out of her mother's protective, calm shell that is driving her insane. One thing that helps her overcome her struggle to be strong is when Macy's mother has a real estate party and Macy meets the Wish catering company. They are crazy, unorganized, and chaotic- exactly what Macy needs. Her life also changes when she sub-consciously falls in love with Wes, a boy who works with her new friends at Wish. Macy's mother has been pushing herself away from her husband's death for a year and a half and when Caroline (Macy's sister) proposes they fix up their father's old beach house, she tries to pull away but Caroline wont let her, insisting she finally face the past.

Sarah Dessen writes in first-person, or from the perspective of the main character. She uses age-appropriate language, the age being 16 or 17, but understandable for younger age groups as well. Sarah's tone is very dramatic. When she describes the main character's feelings, she always uses imagery and details so that when you're reading, it really feels like your seeing the story through Macy's eyes. I started wishing the characters that were Macy's friends were my friends as well, and feeling like they were because I knew them so well.

I would recommend this book to girls in 6th grade and up, even guys if they like a good book and don't mind a little romance. The Truth about Forever teaches the powerful lesson that nobody is perfect in a unique way that gave me a better understanding of the old saying. I really loved this book and wished for more but thought the ending was perfect. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
