      Synopsis

The thrilling and surprising story of the 1966 World Series--the upset that changed baseball history.

From the brilliant author of The Long Ball comes an unforgettable account of the epic World Series clash between the celebrated Los Angeles Dodgers and the perennial underdog Baltimore Orioles. Nobody expected the Orioles to win; after all, by 1966, the Dodgers had replaced the Yankees as the dominant team in baseball, winning two of the previous three World Series. Few outside of Baltimore gave the Orioles more than a fighting chance.

What transpired over four games astonished and mesmerized a nation in turmoil. Baltimore's young pitchers shredded the veteran Dodgers lineup, setting Major League records along the way. Nobody had ever seen dominating pitching like this before: In the entire Series, the Dodgers scored only two runs and collected a mere 17 hits. Their team batting average was a lowly .142, and--incredibly--for the last 33 innings of the series, they were held scoreless.

Author Biography: Tom Adelman is the author of the national bestseller The Long Ball. He has also written several novels and works of music criticism. Adelman and his family live in Princeton, New Jersey.

March 27, 2006: The 1966 Baltimore Orioles are probably the least remebered of the great Baltimore teams of the late 60's and early 70's.They were a collection of veteran players, journeyman relievers, and young untested arms. The Dodgers were the World Champions of 1965 riding to victory behind Sandy Koufax.By 1966 it was clear the Dodgers were on their last legs. Both Drysdale and Koufax held out for more money,Koufax had developed arthritis in his pitching arm.Mr.Adelman goes into detail of the agony Koufax endured just to pitch.Key injuries to Maury Wills and Tommy Davis slowed them down, and rookie pitcher Don Sutton blew his arm out and wasn't available for the Series.During the offseason of 1965 the Reds traded Frank Robinson (an old 30) for 3 Baltimore players. Most people thought the Reds got the better deal.By seasons end Robinson had won baseball's Triple Crown (most in Homeruns, B.A., and R.B.I.'s)The first and only black to win baseball's elite award. No one's won it since 1967 just to give you an idea of how tough it is to achieve it.During the World Series there was gutsy pitching and flashy defensive plays which are described in detail.A great read.Just as in his previous book The Long Ball you are in the middle of the action.Mr. Adelman is doing for baseball what Laura Hillenbrand did for horse racing.
