Offering a range of definitions of "technology" and "innovation" and models of innovation, Howells analyzes technological invention. He discusses "the technology complex," which encompasses tools of market economy institutions that serve to either constrain or enable decisions by R&D managers and entrepreneurs. Diverse examples of inventions (from penicillin to cars) examined in US, Japanese, and European contexts, illustrate issues about socio- cognitive creation processes, applications, standards, patents, and the "reference market" for technology. A few sections of the book have appeared in different form in relevant journals. Judging from his spelling and bibliographic listings, the author apparently is a British scholar.
