To respond to the abuse of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in education, Birden (educational foundations, SUNY-Buffalo) has invented the concept of the "Out-Sider" as one who sides with those who are "out." She calls for an Out-Sider's praxis to mitigate the tradition of compulsory heterosexuality and to educate about sexual identity. Those praxes include legal and pedagogical inclusion and "queering discourse" by de-centering normative gender roles. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
