They are the unsung heroes of health care, putting their own lives at risk to provide support and comfort to those who need it most. Registered nurse Michael Brown has interviewed over fifty practicing nurses, spanning forty-one states and most nursing specialties. In Nurses: the Human Touch, he takes you to the front lines of his profession, where split-second, life-and-death decisions are made every day.
You'll experience firsthand the combatlike tension of an inner-city emergency room, the nonstop action of a Mobile Intensive Care Unit, the sound, sight, and feel of an operation in progress, harrowing daily life in a psychiatric hospital, and the joy of welcoming in the newly born. You'll share in the challenges and rewards, triumphs and disappointments of the nursing profession. And you'll watch extraordinary stories unfold--life stories that bear witness to the courage, commitment, and compassion of these outstanding medical professionals.
The unsung heroes of health care at last let their voices be heard in this important addition to the bestselling true medicine list. From every area of hospital work, here are real nurses' accounts of the tensions of an inner-city emergency room, the action of a Mobile Care Unit, the tragedy of an AIDS clinic, the hope of a maternity ward, and more. Original.
This is a wonderful, well-written book about the nursing profession and the dedicated people in it. Brown knows nursing and writes with compassion and clarity, telling it like it is. Covering mainly hospital nursing in its various departments (i.e., ER, MED/SURG, Labor & Delivery), Brown fills his book with stories of the daily ups and downs of nursing, its frustrations and satisfactions as seen and lived through the experience of real nurses, from students to veterans. He keeps medical jargon to a minimum, explaining abbreviations, slang, and acronyms in the text. Far superior to Jane Carpineto's R.N. ( LJ 1/92), Brown's book is highly recommended for both health and general collections.--Anne C. Tomlin, Auburn Memorial Hosp . Lib., N.Y.

August 20, 2000: I read this book in its entirety in one day. I was trying to find at least one positive thing about the nursing profession, but there was none to be found. The book described instance after instance of nurses being mistreated. I am now reconsidering my choice of a profession.
