    Synopsis

Dark allegory of a journey up the Congo River and the narrator's encounter with the mysterious Mr. Kurtz. Masterly blend of adventure, character study, psychological penetration. For many, Conrad's finest, most enigmatic story.

    Biography

Most readers know Joseph Conrad for creating Marlow's harrowing journey through the African Congo in Heart of Darkness. Conrad was adept at capturing the physical and cultural experiences he gleaned from 15 years at sea, but he also wrote political thrillers, essays, and plays based on his own short stories. His best works tend to be brief, but pack in a remarkable perspicacity about humanity's deepest faults.

November 10, 2009: I read this book several years ago in college, while completing my English BA, and was so intensely impressed, I actually chose to write a paper on it. This dark and disturbing tale is perhaps the single best (word for word, paragraph for paragraph) written piece of fiction I've ever read. And, as a lifelong voracious reader, this is no small compliment! It's so beautifully written, it almost reads like poetry -- as though Conrad chose each and every word with extreme care. You will find yourself reading the chilling passages again and again, just for the sheer horrific joy of it! A masterpiece, plain and simple. BUY IT.
