Textbook Information
Between these covers reside a twenty pound duck that won't fly, thirty miles of barbed-wire fencing, and several batches of illicit whiskey. Fup is a classic tale that celebrates all the amazing connections and pitfalls of rustic living. The story is set in the coastal hills of northern California between 1880 and the present. The plot revolves around Grandaddy Jake Santee who believes he is immortal, his grandson Tiny whose passion is building masterfully crafted fences even though they don't have any stock, and Fup, a hen mallard with a prodigious appetite. These three come together in a transcendent tale that has won international acclaim and the affection of thousands of readers.
A stupendous little book…that will knock your socks off.

February 19, 2007: One of the most entertaining and funniest books I have ever read. Jim Dodge has struck gold with this little book. It should be made into a movie.

June 20, 2003: I stumbled on FUP a few years ago at a book store. This is an incredibly imaginative book with rich, deep characters, even though you can read it in just a few hours. I loved the book and its characters so much I began giving copies of it to my friends and family for birthdays and things like that. It is the best book I have read with the exception of Siegfried Brian Barger's June 2003 novel, FONTANA, and Larry McMurtry's LONESOME DOVE. I cannot recommend FUP enough.
