December 02, 2003: This is a good book for introducing a difficult area of music theory. Other books on this topic may be more comprehensive but are very cumbersome to read. Straus's style of writing is clear and easy to understand. The chapter on Pitch Centricity is quite interesting and is something that other books describing post-tonal music theory fail to cover in as much detail. The musical examples were all well selected and really help to highlight the concepts that Straus is conveying. I totally recommend this book to anyone who is trying to gain a basic understanding of post-tonal music theory.
