(Paperback - Student Edition)
Regarded throughout the English-speaking world as the standard English translation of the Holy Scriptures, the Tanakh has been acclaimed by scholars, rabbis, lay leaders, Jews, and Christians alike. This translation (1985) represents more than a quarter of a century of intense collaboration between rabbis and scholars from the Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform streams of Judaism working side by side with scholars in the Semitic languages and biblical studies. The translators consulted the most ancient texts and the most modern commentaries in undertaking the awesome responsibility of preparing a text that would become a standard for the community. The Torah, Prophets (Nevi'im), and Writings (Kethuvim) are here in a single volume, incorporating the latest revisions.
A landmark of Jewish religious scholarship. Turns Holy Writ into fresh, understandable, contemporary language.

January 03, 2001: I really enjoy this translation of the Bible. This is the first translation I've found that breaks the translation down into standard English paragraphs that read the way a story is expected to read. Most translations create a new paragraph for every 'verse' of every chapter. This translation instead makes most 'verses' into separate sentences as part of larger paragraphs. Even though it may not be a 'perfect' translation (I doubt there is such a thing, which is why people go back and study the original in the original language), it really is VERY good. Further, it is truly readable and enjoyable. I highly recommend this book
