November 05, 2003: This is by far the most complete bible I have ever used. It not only contains wonderful explanations and an abundance of historical information, but an entire section of maps of the region over the centuries that the Hebrew scriptures and the New Testament were recorded. This bible is excellent for any level reader because it allows you to simply read scripture literally as well as dive deeper. This publication is recommended for use by the University of the South's Department of Theology.

August 05, 2002: Bruce Metzger did a very fine job with both the Revised Standard Version of this Oxford Annotated edition in 1946-52 and when the New Revised Standard was introduced back in 1990. But the new editor Michael Coogan does an excellent job of expanding the annotations, adding more technical notes, and explaining some of the most perplexing verses in the latest [3rd] edition of this translation from Oxford. The scholars at Oxford manage not only provide an unbiased account of the New Testament, but now rely heavily on Hebrew scholars for commentary and reference in the Old Testament and Apocrypha, thus bringing meaningful new textual insights and research depth to modern students/scholars of the Bible. This edition provides critical commentary and explanatory notes not only for most verses but cross-references material throughout the volume, leaving no part uncovered or unexplained. The advantage is that one saves money by fully exploring this Oxford annotated Bible first. Thus, this is a Bible for the serious Biblical student/scholar, not for the casual reader. And if you want deeper historical context, further cross-referencing, consider purchasing the Oxford Bible Commentary (ISBN 0198755007) along with it.
