    Synopsis

This is the first volume of a set of five undergraduate textbooks and a reader introducing contemporary themes and challenges in religious studies and published in association with The Open University, UK, which is where the editor and most of the contributors teach. The first volume considers media by which religious traditions and practices are passed down the generations. Five contributed chapters address such topics as Jesus in history and film, Hindu sacred images for the mass market, Buddhism in the UK, the Islamization of Egyptian society 1970-2000, and religion on the Internet. Five reprinted articles follow, on such topics as the characterization of Jesus, the embodiment of divinity in India, and Buddhism in Europe. Annotation c.
