Synopsis

In this collection of five short stories and a novella, set mostly in China during and after the Cultural Revolution, Geling Yan presents us with unforgettable characters who have all, in one way or another, left home. Taking as her territory the disorienting space between home and away, Yan charts the unexpected and illuminating transformation of her characters' hearts and minds as they find themselves thrust into unlikely intimacy with strangers who embody different histories and different desires: Sun Likun, a ballet dancer placed under investigative detention as a "decadent bourgeois element" and Shan Shan, a devoted fan who choreographs a deceptive dance to woo Sun Likun back into life; a Tibetan herdsman and an urban-elite Chinese girl-soldier forced together by necessity and loneliness; and a young army officer from a desperately impoverished village, on trial for the murder of a superior, and an urban reporter baffled by his impassivity.

About the Author:

Geling Yan is the author of six novels and many other books published in China, where her work is well known and has won several prestigious awards. Born in Shanghai, she was inducted into the army at the age of 12 during the Cultural Revolution, eventually becoming a war correspondent and a writer. Yan left China in the aftermath of Tiananmen and now makes her home in the San Francisco Bay Area.
