July 07, 2008: I am a huge fan of historical fiction and when I came upon this book, I was very excited to dive into the story line and discover exactly what this author had in store for her reader. In addition, being a woman, I was captivated by the character analysis of a struggling, courageous woman fighting for what she believes in. I was not disappointed. The Mandrake Broom leaves a taste of immense mastery in literature and the knowledge of the era in which Wells writes. The story was compelling, raw, and true. Wells is an author that knows how to capture a reader. I felt apart of this story for so many different reasons. I was able to connect with the main character that was underestimated and externally powerless in the world of medieval medicine. However, internally, this character holds strength, knowledge, and the yearning to bridge the gap between love, grief, and unity. I recommend this book to any type of reader who wants to be thrown into the world that the characters are living. This novel has been written to weigh every word, but is somehow delivered with a breathlessness of a story told for the first time.
