    Synopsis

THE EAGERLY AWAITED COLLECTION OF PERSONAL ESSAYS FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF MY HORIZONTAL LIFE

When Chelsea Handler needs to get a few things off her chest, she appeals to a higher power -- vodka. You would too if you found out that your boyfriend was having an affair with a Peekapoo or if you had to pretend to be honeymooning with your father in order to upgrade to first class. Welcome to Chelsea's world -- a place where absurdity reigns supreme and a quick wit is the best line of defense.

In this hilarious, deliciously skewed collection, Chelsea mines her past for stories about her family, relationships, and career that are at once singular and ridiculous. Whether she's convincing her third-grade class that she has been tapped to play Goldie Hawn's daughter in the sequel to Private Benjamin, deciding to be more egalitarian by dating a redhead, or looking out for a foulmouthed, rum-swilling little person who looks just like her...only smaller, Chelsea has a knack for getting herself into the most outrageous situations. Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea showcases the candor and irresistible turns of phrase that have made her one of the freshest voices in comedy today.

    Susan McClellan - Library Journal

Best-selling author Handler (My Horizontal Life), a well-known stand-up comic who stars in her own E! network series, Chelsea Handler Lately, has once again written a hilarious book. In this collection of essays on relationships, family life, and her own adventures, she is both charming and brutally honest. In one priceless piece, Handler tells of babysitting a 14-year-old when she herself was only 12; her recollection of her charge's behavior is sure to give readers a good laugh. Also hysterical is the story of how Handler regifted a used game of Rehab to a friend on her birthday-the same game she had herself earlier been gifted. Handler is brilliant at her craft of comedy, and it shows in her descriptions of one witty situation after another. Highly recommended for academic and public libraries and for anyone wanting a good laugh.

February 09, 2010: Chelsea Handler's Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea is a collection of ridiculous stories from her past whose topics range from drunken midgets, spending the night in jail, and pretending to be honeymooning with her father to upgrade to first class. Each chapter is a different outrageous story, memorable stories include the time she told her third grade class she was about to play Goldie Hawn's daughter in the sequel to Private Benjamin in order to attract a certain boy, or the time she babysat a fourteen year old while she was only twelve herself. The major messages and themes o f this novel are Handler's ability to turn horrifying events hilarious and her brutal honesty in today's world. The stories were hilarious and entertaining but bordered on ridiculous. The sheer outlandishness of Handler's experiences hints that the stories are either highly embellished or not true at all. In some parts of the book her "humor" can be viewed as vulgar, trashy, and offensive, as is the language used. Anyone who is easily offended should not read this book or even pick it up. If you like wild, bizarre, drunk adventures you would like this book and should also read Handler's other autobiographies My Horizontal Life and Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang. Overall I would give this book a 3 out of 5 stars.

February 08, 2010: Chelsea Handler, the author of the comedic yet very personal nonfiction novel, "Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," is uncontrollably honest, and half of the book is spent being politically incorrect. However, whichever way you look at it Chelsea's writing style is credible and manages to stay likable even when you're reading about her lesbian encounters in jail because of a DUI.

Handler grew up in a half Jewish, half Mormon household and was the youngest of five kids. She lived in a neighborhood where the least expensive car owned was a Mercedes; however her father worked as a pre-owned cars salesman. Clearly, Chelsea didn't fit in as easily as she would have liked, so in order to make it to the top she begins telling "white lies" so the other kids will like her, eventually it turns into her dry unbelievable, yet simply irresistible humor that audiences know today.

Each chapter of this masterpiece focuses on a new, astonishing yet intriguing event in Chelsea's life, and each one of them will leave you thoroughly shocked and wanting more. All through the book we learn about Chelsea's obsession with midgets, her passion towards an "ugly" red head, and her false encounter with the Eagle's super star, Don Henley. As the book advances it becomes clear that Chelsea has literally...NO fear. Each experience in her life is noted and proves that no matter what situation occurs in life, there can always be an adventure attached to it. Chelsea's style of writing is humorous and bold, but it is clear that the point of her story is to allow readers to understand that life is erratic; the more you try to plan it out, the more unpredictable the outcome becomes.

This book is worth a solid four stars out of five, and it shines almost as bright as Chelsea Handler's distinctive sense of humor. I really enjoyed the layout of the book as well as the writing style; both completely genius. "Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," is written in a series of short stories, however it manages to stay consistently pleasant, and still has the approach of a novel. The hardback was outstanding, a positive light read, however I would have liked to see at least one serious passage throughout the book. I think this would have complimented Chelsea's talent nicely and proved that she has the ability to write in different manners. Considering Handler's presence though, the book fits her life and style well.

If you're looking for a good laugh and have a "sick" sense of humor this book is certainly for you. While reading I noticed myself laughing aloud, and at times I felt like I was in the wild, uncontrollable world of Chelsea Handler. Chelsea's natural lovable personality radiates through in this book, and she becomes someone you love, to love.
